ExpertsDirect Pro Bono Service

About ExpertsDirect Pro Bono Service

The ExpertsDirect Pro Bono Service is for pro bono lawyers and community lawyers. It aims to connect those lawyers with professionals who are willing to provide expert witness services for free (or at low cost) in legal cases that assist clients experiencing disadvantage or marginalisation.

Every litigation lawyer knows that expert evidence can make or break a case. But the cost of obtaining the required expert advice, reports, meeting attendances and courtroom evidence can be considerable. By defraying the cost of expert evidence, the ExpertsDirect Pro Bono Service helps disadvantaged clients get the legal assistance they need.

A joint project of the Australian Pro Bono Centre and ExpertsDirect, this Service gives qualifying applicants access to an array of expert witnesses in fields as diverse as medicine, finance, psychology, property valuation, engineering and more.

How does it work?

  1. Application: Pro bono and community lawyers can download and complete the application form here. Once complete, please email it to the Centre at info@probonocentre.org.au with the subject lineExpertsDirect Pro Bono Service’.
  2. Assessment: The Centre will assess the application to confirm it relates to a pro bono or legal assistance matter.
  3. Referral: Qualifying applications will be referred to ExpertsDirect, usually within 48 hours.
  4. Recommendation: ExpertsDirect will get in touch with applicants directly to advise whether a qualified expert witness is available.

Limitations of the Service

While ExpertsDirect will always use its best efforts to find you a match, it cannot guarantee it will be able to find a suitable expert within the timeframe and in the location you require.

Please note that ExpertsDirect provides its service of matching lawyers with experts on a pro bono basis. Experts who provide their services through the ExpertsDirect Pro Bono Service do so for free, or at a reduced cost. When expert services are provided at a reduced cost, ExpertsDirect does not provide funding support to applicants for those services. If funding support is required, applicants should arrange this independently of the ExpertsDirect Pro Bono Service.
