Centre loses a Corker
This headline mimics a news headline 15 years ago when I first joined the Centre which read “Centre gains a Corker”.
As announced at the recent 7th National Access to Justice and Pro Bono Conference (see full report and photos below), after 15 years at the Australian Pro Bono Centre I have stepped down as CEO as at 1 April 2019 (not an April Fool’s joke). Gabriela Christian-Hare, Head of Policy and Strategy has taken over as acting CEO until the position is filled.
I am staying on as a part-time consultant to the Centre until the end of the financial year to facilitate a smooth transition to a new CEO.
None of us is here for ever and this move is one of transition to make it easier for me to engage in other projects without the pressure of full-time work. Whilst I am approaching ‘retirement age’, I know that my drive for social justice will manifest itself in new ways. And for some one who has never taken long service leave or sabbaticals, the thought of some constructive rest and recreation is enticing.
I am extremely grateful to all of you who support and help the Centre flourish. I believe that it is in great shape and continues to have important work to do. Pro bono attracts splendid and interesting people and that is part of the reason why it’s been such a terrific job. The many relationships I have developed in the profession, the community sector, in government and elsewhere I value greatly, and I hope some of them will continue.
I will continue posting professionally on Linked In and will remain contactable through my email address at the Centre until July 2019.
All the Best
John Corker
