Centre speaks at Sydney University Law Society careers event
30 April 2020
On 29 April 2020, the Centre’s Policy and Project Officer Sally Embelton spoke at the Sydney University Law Society’s Community Legal Centre Table Talk event.
Sally was invited to speak at the event to talk about social justice careers, and the work of the Australian Pro Bono Centre (Centre). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually via a video conferencing platform.
Sally and representatives of the Law Society had an interesting 30-minute discussion in front of an audience of students who had dialled in, focusing particularly on:
- what led Sally to a career in social justice and advocacy
- the impact of pro bono work on disadvantaged communities
- the most rewarding and challenging aspects of working at the Centre
- what the Centre looks for in potential employees
- advice for students that are interested in pursuing a social justice career.
At the end of the discussion, Sally was also asked insightful questions from some of the attendees about the limitations of policy work and unmet legal need.
It was wonderful to participate in a discussion with students who are so eager to pursue a career in social justice. The Centre is grateful to the Sydney University Law Society for the opportunity to participate.
